I've posted some information about this on some other posts, but I think it should be more publicized and should have its own post. As many of us have recognized, the interest and excitement for space exploration has diminished substantially over the last decade. Some research has indicated that this may be tied directly to the dwindling focus on science and math that has traditionally been a part of U.S. education. Much more focus has turned towards reading and away from the sciences.

So my question is whether or not there is anything simple that we can do to help support the cause for space exploration and to re-ignite the excitement for what lies beyond our own atmosphere? I believe that there IS something that we can do. The Utah Space Association as well as many members of the National Space Society (NSS) have formed a website (www.spaceexplorationday.us) with the intent of gathering enough interest and signatures that a petition can be brought to the President of the United States to instantiate July 20th as a national holiday equivalent to Flag Day. The holiday would be called Space Exploration Day and would be on the anniversary of the first moon landing by the U.S. (July 20th). If you feel inclined at all towards space exploration, then please join in this cause and add your signature to the petition. Just visit www.spaceexplorationday.us and you can sign your name. I hope that this cause can go through. It would be great to have an annual reminder of what we have achieved in the past with the hope that it will spark more interest for what we can achieve in the future.
